Importance of Cyclist Insurance

There are three aspects of cycling for which insurance may be required:

  1. Theft of cycle or damage to cycle.  This is covered under many standard home contents insurance policies, or where not covered as standard, is available as an add-on to the policy.  However you should check your policy.  Sometimes bicycles are covered only if stolen from your home, not when you are out.  If you are a student or live in rented accommodation you may not have any form of insurance cover.
  2. Liability for damage or injury caused to others by the cyclist.   Again this is often covered by standard home contents policies, which typically include an element of public liability insurance to cover damage to property or injury to non-family members, generally up to £1M or £2M, but you should check to ensure that your policy does not exclude cycling accidents.
  3. Legal expenses insurance to cover you for legal advice and assistance in bringing a claim if you are injured in an accident.   Cyclists are very vulnerable on our roads and some of the most serious injuries suffered in road accidents are suffered by cyclists.  Bringing a personal injury claim enables the injured person to recover financial losses, including loss of earnings and medical expenses, and can in serious injury claims enable the accident victim to cover the cost of prompt rehabilitative treatment to speed up recovery.  When you have been injured, the cost of repairs to your bicycle and any other property damaged in the accident can be claimed together with compensation for the injury. We are pleased to be able to offer legal expenses insurance to cover your legal advice free of charge. Some safety tips for when you're cycling

  1. Ride decisively, confidently and well clear of the kerb – look and signal to show drivers what you plan to do.
  2. Avoid riding up the inside of large vehicles, like lorries or buses, where you might not be seen
  3. Always use lights after dark or when visibility is poor
  4. Wearing light coloured or reflective clothing during the day and reflective clothing and/or accessories in the dark as this increases your visibility
  5. Follow the Highway Code including observing ‘stop’ and ‘give way’ signs and traffic lights
  6. Wear a correctly fitted cycle helmet, which is securely fastened and conforms to current regulations

Prolegal is campaigning for:

  1. All lorries entering city centres to be required to fit sensors, audible turning alarms and safety bars to stop cyclists being thrown under the wheels.
  2. The Highways Agency to set aside 5% of its budget for next generation cycle routes. In Copenhagen, where 90% of people own a bicycle and over a third of them ride weekly, the introduction of separated cycle lanes has seen fatalities plummet. It is not enough to paint the roads with streaks of blue, change needs to be structural and geographical.
  3. Greater improvements of the training of cyclists and drivers. We believe that cycle safety should become a core part of the driving test.  More resources need to be devoted to the “Think! Cyclist” (http://think.direct.gov.uk/cycling.html)  campaign to reinforce the messages to both drivers and cyclists to improve awareness of basic safety measures.
  4. The compulsory provision of cycle safety lights on all new bikes purchased in the UK.
