Our standard web programming policy is not to use cookies. We have avoided cookies in all of our own code, except for the cookie compliance message which necessitates the addition of first-party cookies. This is the only place in our own code where we have used first-party cookies.

There are areas where we need to examine random visitor interactions with our site, for example to debug new areas of code in our online presence, or to examine specific user interactions where, for example, a visitor has reported a bug or where there has been a suspicion of fraud. In these cases we prefer to rely on non-cookie methods to find information about a visitor’s interaction with our site. Our preferred technique is to examine IP addresses from log files rather than to rely upon cookies.

Our code runs on a content management system and development framework. This framework does generate cookies which are listed below.

The table below explains the cookies we use and why.

Cookie banner

This cookie is used to control the appearance of the cookies information banner. This cookie is set on arrival to the site by default. It expires after a set time (the UK Information Commissioner's Office website uses a similar technique).

Cookie preference

This cookie is used to remember a user’s choice about cookies on this website (The UK Information Commissioner's Office website uses a similar technique).

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics. The UK Information Commissioner's Office website uses the same service and describes the cookies as follows:
"These cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site. We use the information to compile reports and to help us improve the site. The cookies collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, where vistors have come to the site from and the pages they visited."

Google provide the following:

- A detailed explanation of these cookies.
- Google's own privacy policy.
- A tool to block Google Analytics across all sites.

Framework cookies

The 'session' cookie contains a unique random number that is carried through each set of interactions (e.g. your series of clicks within our website). We check this unique random number if you contact us via an online form. We allow you to provide further information via additional online forms after you contact us initially, and the random number that we assign helps our systems to keep all of your communications together. We use this primarily to be sure that we are responding to the correct person. This also helps us protect against spam.

AB Tests

We also use cookies to test new features on our templates. These are called 'A/B' tests. We randomly assign 50 percent of visitors to one group to see a new feature and 50 percent to another and we use cookies so that visitors stay broadly in the same groups. This is completely anonymous and we have no way of knowing who in particular is in any group. We simply check whether we see an improvement of user experience beyond or below 50 percent. These tests are temporary whenever we develop new features in our templates.
